Finding Flavor: My Top 5 Culinary Inspirations in KC
Growing up in Atlanta, I was spoiled with a diverse array of cuisines and choices. I attended the University of Kansas, and after graduation, I decided to stay in the area, settling in Kansas City. Initially, the food scene didn’t impress me, but the more I explored, the more gems I discovered. Kansas City is rapidly growing, bringing in new concepts and ideas over the past few years. Kansas City has evolved into a culinary haven, where innovation thrives and flavors are constantly reimagined. Every month, I make it a point to try a new place, but there are a few spots that hold a special place in my heart, offering incredible meals, service, and experiences.
1. Farina
Located in downtown Kansas City, Farina redefines classic Italian cuisine with its fresh handmade pastas, exquisite oyster bar, and an impressive wine list. This culinary treasure is the creation of Michael Smith, one of the city’s pioneering James Beard Award-winning chefs. Smith also owns the neighboring Extra Virgin, a delightful tapas spot, and the recently opened Extra Virgin Grab & Go.
Farina remains my favorite restaurant, consistently delivering exceptional experiences. Upon seating, guests are treated to freshly made focaccia accompanied by a spicy olive oil and the finest Castelvetrano olives—a nod to my own All Live business inspiration. Each visit, whether for a date night, a casual bar meal, or a private party, has been nothing short of extraordinary, with impeccable service and flawless dishes.
Menu highlights include the parmesan clam toast, Sardinian black rice, oysters, and the spaghetti cacio e pepe. While the menu changes seasonally, these staples remain. A standout seasonal dish I once enjoyed was a lobster roll, perfectly balanced with just the right amount of meat, bread, and seasoning.
The atmosphere at Farina is moody, clean, and classy, with a sophisticated ambiance that perfectly complements the culinary artistry. The dim lighting, elegant decor, and attentive service create an inviting and intimate setting, making every dining experience truly memorable.
The Antler Room is a culinary gem that masterfully combines local ingredients with innovative techniques. The frequently changing menu ensures that each visit offers a fresh and unique experience, often drawing inspiration from Persian, Asian, and Mediterranean flavors. With only 32 seats in the dining room, dining here feels like winning a golden ticket, offering an intimate and exclusive atmosphere.
Inside, the cozy and inviting setting, coupled with the wonderful staff, transports you to another world for two hours. The small, shareable menu encourages diners to sample multiple dishes, a dining style I adore. The Antler Room stands out in Kansas City for its unparalleled approach to restaurant management, plating, and the use of intriguing ingredients.
My experience was so inspiring that I requested a meeting with one the owners, Leslie, to learn about their journey and the secrets behind their exceptional dining experience. Their dedication to sourcing top-quality ingredients from local farmers is evident in every dish.
During my most recent visit, standout dishes included the smoked maitake mushroom focaccia toast, the little gem salad with crab and trout roe, and the potato gyoza. Each dish surprised and delighted with its unique combination of ingredients, setting The Antler Room apart from other establishments. I have nothing but praise for this extraordinary restaurant and can’t wait to return to keep learning and finding inspiration!

Nestled in the heart of Brookside, this spot feels like a cozy neighborhood retreat. With just 40 seats, it’s intimate and inviting, almost like stepping into a friend’s home rather than a bustling restaurant. The food here is exceptional, with ingredients flown in from the best coastal cities, including Maine.
The menu is simple but masterfully executed. Every visit feels like a reunion, with familiar faces and friendly smiles all around. I love sitting at the bar, ordering a few dishes to share, and just soaking in the atmosphere.
Last time I dined, the oysters were a standout, so fresh they transported me straight to the coast. The trout dip was a revelation, and the tidewater biscuit, which reminded me of a deconstructed seafood pot pie, was a delightful surprise. The mussels, always a good choice, came in a buttery broth perfect for soaking up with bread.
In this quaint setting, it’s easy to forget you’re in Brookside and feel like you’ve been whisked away to a little bar in Maine. Each dining experience here is truly memorable.
